Mercosur \u2014Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay\u2014 have taken a decisive step with the signing of the EU\u2013Mercosur Association Agreement and the launch of its Interim Trade Agreement. The agreement will begin provisional application from May 1, 2026, marking a structural shift in trade relations between both blocs.\n<br>\n<br>\nThe agreement creates one of the largest free trade areas in the world, covering a market of over 700 million consumers. Its main objective is to reduce trade barriers, improve the predictability of trade relations, and strengthen supply chains between Europe and South America, in a global context marked by geopolitical tensions and protectionist trends. One of the pillars of the agreement is the progressive reduction of tariffs. More than 90% of bilateral trade will see its customs duties reduced or eliminated gradually.\n<br>\n<br>\nFor European exports to Mercosur, where currently high tariffs exist, the agreement will enable significant cost savings: up to 35% on automobiles and components, between 14% and 20% on industrial machinery, up to 18% on chemical products, and up to 14% on pharmaceutical products. The European Commission estimates that these reductions will represent annual savings of more than 4 billion euros for EU companies.\n<br>\n<br>\nThe tariff elimination will not be immediate for all products. The implementation timeline provides for different transition periods, ranging from five to fifteen years for most industrial goods, with longer terms for sectors considered particularly sensitive. In parallel, the European Union will apply tariff-rate quotas for certain agricultural imports from Mercosur \u2014such as beef, poultry, sugar, or ethanol\u2014 in order to protect European producers.\n<br>\n<br>\nThe most benefited sectors on the European side will be automotive, machinery, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, as well as beverages and high value-added agri-food products such as wines, spirits, olive oil, and chocolate. The agreement also opens new opportunities in services, public procurement, and access to critical raw materials strategic for the green and digital transition.\n<br>\n<br>\nBeyond tariffs, the agreement introduces significant improvements in customs procedures and rules of origin. Companies will be able to benefit from a self-certification system for origin through declarations on invoices, which will simplify the use of tariff preferences. However, access to these benefits will require adequate operational preparation, including the analysis of product origin, correct tariff classification, and the availability of solid supporting documentation.\n<br>\n<br>\nLikewise, the agreement strengthens commitments on sustainability, environmental protection, and labor rights, incorporating the Paris Agreement as an essential element and establishing monitoring and safeguard mechanisms. These provisions will have a growing impact on supply chains and on companies\u2019 due diligence obligations.\n<br>\n<br>\nFor companies operating between the EU and Mercosur, 2026 will be a key year for preparation. Identifying eligible products, evaluating the financial impact of tariff reductions, adapting trade contracts, and strengthening customs compliance processes will be essential steps to maximize the agreement\u2019s benefits from its provisional entry into force.\n<br>\n<br>\nThe EU\u2013Mercosur agreement is not merely a tariff reduction, but a new strategic framework that will redefine bilateral trade in the coming decades. Instagram UE\u2013Mercosur: un nuevo acuerdo comercial que transformar\u00e1 el comercio internacional. Tras m\u00e1s de 25 a\u00f1os de negociaciones, la Uni\u00f3n Europea y los pa\u00edses fundadores de Mercosur \u2014Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay y Uruguay\u2014 han dado un paso decisivo con la firma del Acuerdo de Asociaci\u00f3n UE\u2013Mercosur y la puesta en marcha de su Acuerdo Comercial Interino. El acuerdo comenzar\u00e1 a aplicarse de manera provisional a partir del 1 de mayo de 2026, marcando un cambio estructural en las relaciones comerciales entre ambos bloques. El acuerdo crea una de las mayores zonas de libre comercio del mundo, cubriendo un mercado de m\u00e1s de 700 millones de consumidores. Su objetivo principal es reducir barreras comerciales, mejorar la previsibilidad de las relaciones comerciales y reforzar las cadenas de suministro entre Europa y Am\u00e9rica del Sur, en un contexto global marcado por tensiones geopol\u00edticas y tendencias proteccionistas. Uno de los pilares del acuerdo es la reducci\u00f3n progresiva de aranceles. M\u00e1s del 90 % del comercio bilateral ver\u00e1 sus derechos de aduana reducidos o eliminados de forma gradual. Para las exportaciones europeas a Mercosur, donde actualmente existen aranceles elevados, el acuerdo permitir\u00e1 importantes ahorros en costes: hasta un 35 % en autom\u00f3viles y componentes, entre un 14 % y un 20 % en maquinaria industrial, hasta un 18 % en productos qu\u00edmicos y hasta un 14 % en productos farmac\u00e9uticos. La Comisi\u00f3n Europea estima que estas reducciones supondr\u00e1n un ahorro anual de m\u00e1s de 4.000 millones de euros para las empresas de la UE. La eliminaci\u00f3n arancelaria no ser\u00e1 inmediata para todos los productos. El calendario de implementaci\u00f3n prev\u00e9 distintos periodos de transici\u00f3n, que oscilan entre cinco y quince a\u00f1os para la mayor\u00eda de los bienes industriales, con plazos m\u00e1s largos para sectores considerados especialmente sensibles. En paralelo, la Uni\u00f3n Europea aplicar\u00e1 contingentes arancelarios para determinadas importaciones agr\u00edcolas procedentes de Mercosur \u2014como carne de vacuno, aves de corral, az\u00facar o etanol\u2014 con el fin de proteger a los productores europeos. Los sectores m\u00e1s beneficiados del lado europeo ser\u00e1n la automoci\u00f3n, la maquinaria, la industria qu\u00edmica y farmac\u00e9utica, as\u00ed como las bebidas y productos agroalimentarios de alto valor a\u00f1adido como vinos, licores, aceite de oliva y chocolate. El acuerdo tambi\u00e9n abre nuevas oportunidades en servicios, contrataci\u00f3n p\u00fablica y acceso a materias primas cr\u00edticas estrat\u00e9gicas para la transici\u00f3n verde y digital. M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los aranceles, el acuerdo introduce mejoras significativas en materia de procedimientos aduaneros y normas de origen. Las empresas podr\u00e1n acogerse a un sistema de autocertificaci\u00f3n del origen mediante declaraciones en factura, lo que simplificar\u00e1 el uso de preferencias arancelarias. No obstante, el acceso a dichos beneficios exigir\u00e1 una adecuada preparaci\u00f3n operativa, incluyendo el an\u00e1lisis del origen de los productos, la correcta clasificaci\u00f3n arancelaria y la disponibilidad de documentaci\u00f3n justificativa s\u00f3lida. Asimismo, el acuerdo refuerza los compromisos en sostenibilidad, protecci\u00f3n medioambiental y derechos laborales, incorporando el Acuerdo de Par\u00eds como elemento esencial y estableciendo mecanismos de seguimiento y salvaguardia. Estas disposiciones tendr\u00e1n un impacto creciente en las cadenas de suministro y en las obligaciones de diligencia debida de las empresas. Para las compa\u00f1\u00edas que operan entre la UE y Mercosur, 2026 ser\u00e1 un a\u00f1o clave para la preparaci\u00f3n. Identificar productos elegibles, evaluar el impacto financiero de la reducci\u00f3n arancelaria, adaptar contratos comerciales y reforzar los procesos de cumplimiento aduanero ser\u00e1n pasos esenciales para maximizar los beneficios del acuerdo desde su entrada en vigor provisional.
